Why buy Augur?
Augur (REP) is a decentralised prediction market platform similar to Polymarket. It allows users to bet on the outcomes of future events, such as elections, sports, and economic phenomena. The REP token serves two primary purposes: it governs the protocol and resolves disputes within the platform.
In 2025, Augur released an updated roadmap that outlines specific actions regarding the REP token, development milestones, and plans for listing the token on centralised exchanges (CEX). This aims to enhance the token’s liquidity and accessibility.
The platform offers low fees, global access, and no restrictions on money movements, making it an attractive alternative for users looking for options beyond centralised prediction markets.
What it is and how it came about
Augur was founded in 2014 by Jack Peterson and Joey Krug, both researchers and developers in the blockchain field. They aimed to create a fully decentralised predictive marketplace on the Ethereum platform.
The goal was simple and revolutionary: to enable anyone, anywhere in the world, to bet on the outcomes of various events without the need for a central authority. After two years of development, Augur launched its testnet in 2016, which excited the emerging community that had gathered around Ethereum.
The first official version of Augur was released in 2018, coinciding with the early stages of the DeFi industry. To help support the protocol’s ongoing development, the Forecast Foundation was established. This independent organisation is responsible for the infrastructure’s roadmap, governance, and maintenance.
In the following years, Augur evolved to include two main products. The first is Augur Turbo, a generic prediction market built on Polygon that provides fast and cost-effective transactions by utilising decentralised oracles, particularly those developed by Chainlink. The second product is Sportsbook, a platform dedicated exclusively to sports betting.
Following recent updates in 2025, Augur seeks to establish itself as a significant player in the decentralised prediction market. It boasts an active DAO, low fees, and a growing global presence. However, will it succeed in this endeavour despite facing intense competition from Polymarket, which has gained mainstream attention primarily through its predictions related to the US elections?
