What is Algorand (ALGO)

Algorand is a platform that supports decentralised applications and can be used in decentralised finance. Its blockchain is designed to tackle the so-called blockchain trilemma, simultaneously pursuing decentralisation, scalability and security, with particular attention to environmental sustainability.

The network is secured by a Pure Proof of Stake consensus mechanism, a variant of Proof of Stake based on the random and secret selection of validators, described by the project as highly energy-efficient.

How it began: Silvio Micali’s project

Algorand’s founder is the Italian Silvio Micali, a computer science professor at MIT and an expert in cryptography, blockchain technology and digital assets. The mainnet has been live since 2019, also thanks to funds raised through an Initial Coin Offering.

Over time various projects and institutions have chosen the network, including the issuance of stablecoins such as USDT and USDC on Algorand. ALGO is the native crypto-asset, used to pay fees and take part in the consensus mechanism.
