ICO
An ICO (Initial Coin Offering) is a fundraising method by which a project, generally at an early stage, issues and sells tokens in exchange for crypto-assets or money. The funds raised are used to finance the project’s development.
In the past, many ICOs took place with limited protections. The regulatory framework has since changed: in the European Union, the public offering of crypto-assets is now governed by Regulation (EU) 2023/1114 (MiCAR), which sets out specific disclosure obligations.
ICOs are high-risk investments: token values may decrease, even to zero, and in the past, the instrument has also been used for fraudulent schemes. It is essential to check the documentation before taking part.
