What is Chiliz (CHZ)
Chiliz is the crypto-asset behind Socios.com, the platform dedicated to the world of sport — and football in particular — that popularised the concept of the fan token. CHZ is the ecosystem’s general utility token, compatible with the ERC-20 and BEP-20 standards, and acts as the “currency” used to buy the Fan Tokens of individual teams.
The project’s goal is to bring fans closer to their clubs through blockchain technology, turning support into a form of digital participation. Its partners include some of the leading clubs and sports organisations internationally, such as FC Barcelona, Juventus, Inter, Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.
How Fan Tokens work
Fan Tokens are tokens, purchasable with CHZ, that give holders access to a range of benefits linked to the team that issues them: the ability to have a say through polls on “minor” club decisions, access to exclusive content, experiences, prizes and reserved initiatives.
It is important to clarify the distinction: CHZ is the “system” token of the whole ecosystem, while each Fan Token is specific to a particular team. The value and utility of a Fan Token depend on the individual club’s initiatives and are not guaranteed.
How it began and how the network works
The ecosystem was conceived by French entrepreneur Alexandre Dreyfus: the company behind the project was founded in 2012, while the Socios platform launched in late 2019. The infrastructure was initially built on Ethereum; the project later developed its own dedicated blockchain, the Chiliz Chain 2.0, compatible with the Ethereum environment.
This evolution aims to offer a network optimised for sport- and entertainment-related applications, with low fees and fast times.
