EURC: what it is and how it works

Discover what EURC is, the euro stablecoin issued by Circle: how its reserve works, redemption rights at par value, and what to evaluate before using it.

What Is EURC

EURC, short for Euro Coin, is the leading euro-backed stablecoin. Put simply, it is a digital token designed to maintain a value pegged to that of the single currency at a one-to-one ratio.

From a regulatory standpoint under the MiCAR framework, EURC falls into the category of electronic money tokens, also referred to as e-money tokens (EMTs). It shares the same regulated structure as USD Coin, with the sole difference being that its reference fiat currency is the euro rather than the US dollar.

To understand its true nature, it is important to clarify what EURC is not: it is neither an algorithmic token nor a synthetic instrument, nor is it a cryptocurrency backed by other volatile digital assets. EURC does not represent a bet on foreign exchange fluctuations, but rather a direct claim in euros against the issuer that can circulate freely on the blockchain.

Who Issues EURC

The entity issuing and guaranteeing the redemption of EURC is Circle Internet Financial Europe SAS, an electronic money institution authorized by the French supervisory authority since July 1, 2024. By securing this license, Circle became the first global stablecoin issuer to operate in full compliance with the MiCAR regulatory framework, leveraging the European passporting principle to offer its services across all EU Member States.

Its parent company, Circle Internet Group, is listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Being listed on a regulated stock exchange serves as a fundamental element of transparency for end users, as it obliges the company to publish periodic financial statements and undergo rigorous institutional-grade financial audits.

How Do the Reserves Work?

Unlike stablecoins that attempt to maintain parity through complex algorithms or cryptocurrency collateral, a MiCAR-compliant e-money token backs its value on highly concrete legal and economic foundations.

First, for every single token issued in circulation, there is a reserve fund of equal value. European regulations require that a significant portion of this reserve—at least 30%—be held directly as cash deposits with tier-one credit institutions.

Second, anyone holding the token has the legal right to redeem it at par value directly from the issuer at any time and without incurring additional costs. Reserve transparency is guaranteed through monthly reports attested by independent auditing firms and made publicly available.

Official attestations show that the EURC reserve consists entirely of euro cash deposited with supervised financial institutions. These funds are held in segregated accounts, completely separate from Circle’s corporate assets, and restricted for the exclusive benefit of token holders without being invested in high-risk securities or complex-maturity instruments.

The History of EURC and the Impact of MiCAR Regulations

Although EURC has existed since 2022, the turning point in its history coincided with the entry into force of MiCAR rules dedicated to e-money tokens in mid-2024. The new regulatory framework required licensed exchanges in Europe to stop offering unauthorized stablecoins.

Between late 2024 and early 2025, major European trading venues had to delist non-compliant stablecoins. This reorganization shifted a substantial share of liquidity toward instruments fully compliant with the new laws. The growth of EURC reserves reflects this structural shift, highlighting that token expansion was driven by precise market alignment with European rules rather than a temporary speculative trend.

The Euro Stablecoin Market Compared to the Dollar

EURC is the most widely adopted euro stablecoin globally. However, to properly frame the phenomenon, it is helpful to look at the overall proportions of the sector.

The total market for euro-pegged stablecoins still represents a small fraction compared to the giant dollar-stablecoin sector. Nonetheless, growth metrics show an interesting dynamic: while the dollar segment is in a phase of substantial maturity and stability, the euro-denominated segment records consistent percentage expansion rates, demonstrating a progressive adoption of the European currency on the blockchain.

What EURC Is Used For

Using EURC addresses several practical needs for crypto-asset participants. The primary function is value stability without foreign exchange risk exposure. Many users traditionally hold dollar-pegged stablecoins; without euro-pegged options like EURC, they would be inadvertently exposed to euro-dollar exchange rate fluctuations. For users planning their finances in euros, EURC completely eliminates this unwanted volatility.

A second application involves settling transfers outside traditional banking hours. EURC operates on blockchain technology 24/7/365, with execution times and costs determined by the underlying network rather than bank operating calendars.

Additionally, EURC can be utilized within DeFi protocols for activities like swap transactions or lending when managed via a non-custodial wallet.

Finally, cross-chain interoperability is a key feature. EURC is natively issued on several major blockchains, including Ethereum, Base, Solana, Avalanche, and Stellar. The primary concentration of liquidity remains historically tied to the Ethereum network, followed by other high-performance infrastructures.

Regarding operations on Young Platform, EURC deposit and withdrawal services are integrated to meet maximum reliability standards. Before executing any transfer to an external wallet, it is essential to always verify the supported destination network within the app, as sending funds over an incorrect blockchain can result in permanent loss of funds.

In Summary

EURC serves as a regulated and transparent bridge between continental currency and blockchain technology. It allows users to manage euro liquidity with digital speed, aligning with the framework established by MiCAR European directives to ensure maximum protection of reserve funds. Understanding its nature, backing structure, and operational boundaries is the best way to determine whether and how to integrate it into daily crypto-asset management.
