What is Linea (LINEA)
Linea is an Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain developed by Consensys, the company behind MetaMask and Infura. It combines full Ethereum Virtual Machine equivalence with zero-knowledge proof technology: it is a “Type 1” zkEVM, that is a faithful copy of Ethereum onto which developers can bring their applications without changing their code.
The goal is to grow Ethereum’s capacity with faster and cheaper transactions, without giving up the security of the main network. LINEA is the ecosystem’s native crypto-asset.
How it works
Its operation is based on zero-knowledge proofs: the network bundles thousands of transactions, processes them off-chain and generates a single cryptographic proof that is recorded on Ethereum. This drastically reduces fees and increases speed, while inheriting Layer 1 security.
A peculiarity of Linea is that network fees (gas fees) are paid in ETH and not in the LINEA token: a choice that, according to the project, strengthens the link with Ethereum rather than competing with it.
The LINEA token
Unlike many Layer 2s, LINEA is not the token used to pay fees: its role is tied to the protocol’s governance and to participation in network security through staking. Any staking rewards are variable, dependent on the protocol and not guaranteed.
The initial supply is 10 billion tokens, with a cap on annual inflation declared by the project. Linea benefits from native integration with MetaMask and Infura, and even before the token launch it had attracted a large total value locked (TVL) through campaigns such as Voyage and Surge. Part of the distribution is allocated to the community, with a view to the progressive decentralisation of key components such as the sequencer.
Price trends and what to consider
Like all crypto-assets, LINEA has shown a highly volatile price trend and is a relatively recent project. Its quotations can be influenced by the general trend of the crypto market, by the adoption of the network and its protocols and by competition among Layer 2 solutions.
Past performance is not a guarantee of future results.
