What is Sui (SUI)
Sui is a fast and scalable Layer 1 blockchain that uses a Proof of Stake mechanism. Thanks to its architecture, it aims to process a very high number of transactions per second. SUI is the native token, needed to pay fees and to take part in network security through staking.
How it works: the Move language
For smart contracts, Sui uses Move, a language developed by the same team that had worked on Libra, Facebook’s never-realised crypto-asset project. Sui’s approach is centred on “objects”, a way of organising data designed to improve the speed and parallelisation of operations.
Origins and funding
The project is developed by Mysten Labs, founded by former Meta employees; the foundation that organises its ecosystem is led by Greg Siourounis. Sui has raised hundreds of millions of dollars, with investors such as Binance Labs, Coinbase Ventures, a16z crypto, Jump Crypto and Circle Ventures.
