Exchange
An exchange is a platform that allows users to buy, sell and exchange crypto-assets, among themselves or with the platform itself. It serves as a meeting point between supply and demand and determines prices based on orders.
A distinction is drawn between centralised exchanges (CEX), run by an operator that acts as an intermediary and generally holds users’ crypto-assets in custody, and decentralised exchanges (DEX), which operate through smart contracts without a central intermediary. The crypto-asset exchange and custody services offered by centralised operators are subject to the applicable regulations, including the MiCAR Regulation.
