Public Key

A public key is a code derived from the private key through cryptographic functions. It can be shared freely and is used to generate addresses for receiving crypto-assets and to verify signatures made with the corresponding private key.

The public key and the private key form a pair: the public key can be derived from the private key, but not vice versa. This is the principle underlying the asymmetric cryptography used by blockchains.
