What is Dymension (DYM)
Dymension is a blockchain that acts as a “settlement layer”, i.e. a settlement level, within a modular ecosystem built on Cosmos. In practice it provides the base on which other projects can launch their own application chains, called RollApps.
The idea is to simplify and speed up the creation of new specialised networks: those who want to build an application can rely on Dymension for security and transaction settlement, without having to develop an entire infrastructure from scratch.
How it works
RollApps are dedicated application chains that connect to Dymension, which takes care of verifying and “settling” their transactions. The network uses a delegated consensus mechanism (Delegated Proof of Stake) and includes mechanisms for managing emissions and for token “burn” (destruction), designed to regulate its supply over time.
It is an architecture that fits into the broader trend of modular blockchains, in which the various tasks are split among specialised layers.
The DYM token
DYM is used to pay network fees and to take part in the protocol’s governance. The mainnet was launched in February 2024, with an initial token distribution via an airdrop to the community.
The project was founded by Yishay Harel, with the backing of investors such as Big Brain Holdings and Stratos. As a recent project, it is still in the early stages of its development.
What to consider
Like all crypto-assets, and especially for a young project, DYM has shown a highly volatile price trend, tied to the general market and to the actual adoption of the RollApps built on the network.
