What is Hedera (HBAR)
Hedera allows complex decentralised applications to be developed quickly, with management of NFTs, smart contracts and data storage. The native token HBAR has a function similar to ETH on Ethereum: it acts as “fuel” to pay transaction fees and is distributed as a reward for validating the network. The maximum supply is 50 billion HBAR.
A distinctive element concerns governance: unlike many blockchains governed by token holders, Hedera is run by a council of up to 25 large companies and organisations, including entities such as Google, IBM and LG.
How it works: the Hashgraph technology
Hedera differs from classic blockchains because its network is based on a distributed ledger technology (DLT) called Hashgraph, which uses neither blocks nor “miners” but a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) structure. According to the team, this technology allows a very high number of transactions per second, with very low fees and limited energy consumption.
Hedera distributed its initial supply through an ICO in the summer of 2018 and opened the mainnet the following year. The project was created by Leemon Baird, the designer of the Hashgraph algorithm, and Mance Harmon, with a more entrepreneurial and managerial profile.
Price trends and what to consider
Like all crypto-assets, HBAR has shown a highly volatile price trend. Its quotations can be influenced by the general trend of the crypto market, by the network’s adoption and by the initiatives of the council that governs it. Any validation-related rewards are variable and not guaranteed.
Past performance is not a guarantee of future results.
