What is Orca (ORCA)
Orca is one of Solana‘s decentralised exchanges (DEX), based on the automated market maker (AMM) model. Launched in 2021, it stood out for a particularly polished, user-friendly interface, leveraging Solana’s low fees and speed to offer fast and cheap swaps.
ORCA is the platform’s native token, used within the ecosystem and for the protocol’s governance.
How it works
In AMMs, swaps do not go through an order book with a human counterparty, but through liquidity pools funded by users: those who deposit their tokens into a pool receive in return a share of the fees generated by the swaps. Orca also introduced “concentrated” liquidity pools, which allow liquidity to be directed into specific price ranges to use it more efficiently.
It should be clarified that providing liquidity carries specific risks, including impermanent loss (the potential loss compared to simply holding the tokens): any rewards are variable and not guaranteed.
How it began
Orca was launched in February 2021 as one of the first AMM DEXs on Solana. The team, led among others by Yutaro Mori and Grace Kwan, focused from the start on ease of use to make decentralised finance more accessible even to beginners.
Its relevance is closely tied to the health and activity of the Solana ecosystem as a whole.
Price trends and what to consider
Like all crypto-assets, ORCA has shown a highly volatile price trend. Its quotations can be influenced by the general trend of the crypto market, by trading volumes on the platform and by the performance of the Solana ecosystem.
Past performance is not a guarantee of future results.
