What is THORChain (RUNE)
THORChain is a decentralised infrastructure that allows crypto-assets to be exchanged between different and normally incompatible blockchains. Its distinctive feature is enabling “cross-chain” swaps without resorting to “wrapped” tokens (synthetic versions of an asset on another network). It is a Layer 1 blockchain built with Cosmos SDK technology and secured by a Proof of Stake mechanism; THORSwap is the main decentralised exchange (DEX) using it.
How it works
Swaps happen through liquidity pools in which RUNE acts as a “bridge currency” between the different assets. Those who provide liquidity contribute to the protocol’s functioning and can receive variable, non-guaranteed rewards.
The RUNE token
RUNE is the ecosystem’s native crypto-asset and has several functions: paying network fees, powering the liquidity pools, taking part in governance and contributing to security through validators’ staking.
Origins and what to consider
The founders chose to remain anonymous to avoid the concentration of power around individual figures. The protocol launched in 2018, with an ICO the following year.
