What is Worldcoin (WLD)
Worldcoin is a project conceived by Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, with the aim of creating a global digital identity system. The core idea is to be able to verifiably distinguish human beings from bots and fake accounts.
It is a theme made even more relevant by the spread of artificial intelligence: in a world where it is increasingly easy to generate automated content and profiles, proving you are a real and unique person becomes a concrete problem. WLD is the crypto-asset linked to this ecosystem.
How it works: World ID and the Orb
The heart of the project is World ID, a digital identity obtained by having the iris scanned by devices called Orbs. According to the project, World ID does not store the image of the eye, but only a cryptographic “hash” (a kind of numerical fingerprint) associated with a public and private key pair.
It is a so-called “proof of personhood” mechanism, i.e. proof of being a real and unique person, without necessarily revealing one’s legal identity. It is precisely this use of biometric data that makes the project at once innovative and controversial.
The WLD token and the concerns
WLD is an ERC-20 token, present on Ethereum and the Optimism Layer 2. It is distributed to those who create a World ID and is also used for ecosystem governance. The project has grown rapidly worldwide, reaching many millions of verified users.
However, the collection of biometric data has raised doubts and measures from privacy authorities in several countries, which in some cases have limited or suspended its activity: an important aspect to bear in mind.
What to consider
Like all crypto-assets, WLD has had a highly volatile price trend. To this is added the particular sensitivity of biometric data collection and the resulting regulatory uncertainty, which can affect the project’s future.
Past performance is not a guarantee of future results.
