What LayerZero (ZRO) is
LayerZero is an omnichain interoperability protocol: it allows different blockchains to exchange messages and value without going through a traditional bridge. As the name suggests, it operates at a level conceptually beneath the blockchains themselves: it is not a network, it is the connecting technology that networks use to communicate with one another.
This page is for information purposes only: LayerZero is not supported by Young Platform and cannot be bought on the platform.
How it works
The underlying mechanism is the verified transmission of a message from one blockchain to another: when an application on one network needs to convey information to another network, the protocol takes care of carrying that message and having its authenticity verified by parties independent of one another, before it is executed on the destination chain. It is this separation between who carries and who verifies that constitutes the protocol’s security model.
Applications built on it can therefore operate across several networks while keeping a single logic, instead of replicating themselves on each one.
What the token is for
ZRO is the protocol’s token and serves a governance function: holders can vote on proposals for the protocol’s development. It is also intended to be used in paying fees relating to cross-chain operations. Participation in governance carries no economic rights and no expectation of any return.
Origins
The project has raised over 100 million dollars from sector investment funds, including a16z, Sequoia Capital, Circle Ventures, Samsung Next, OpenSea and the auction house Christie’s. The token was distributed to the community through an airdrop in 2024.
What to consider
Infrastructure connecting different blockchains concentrates the value moving between networks at a single point, and for that reason has historically been among the sector’s most targeted: technical risk is a structural feature of the category, not a remote possibility. Competitively, interoperability is also a crowded segment in which the decisive factor is actual adoption by developers.
On top of that comes the volatility common to all crypto-assets. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results.
