What is Cosmos (ATOM)
Cosmos is an ecosystem of interoperable blockchains, often called “the internet of blockchains”. Unlike monolithic networks, Cosmos is a set of independent blockchains (the “zones”) that communicate with each other through the IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication) protocol. The goal is to address two long-standing issues in the sector: scalability and interoperability between different networks. ATOM is the native crypto-asset of the Cosmos Hub, the central blockchain of the ecosystem, and is used to secure the network through staking and for governance.
The ecosystem and developer tools
Developers build applications on Cosmos using the Cosmos SDK, a modular framework that makes it easier to create dedicated blockchains. Thanks to this architecture, the ecosystem hosts notable projects such as Osmosis, Cronos, Thorchain and dYdX, which chose Cosmos for its own standalone blockchain. It previously also hosted Terra (LUNA), which until its collapse represented around 80% of the ecosystem’s total value locked; Terra’s failure is not attributable to Cosmos, which provides the underlying infrastructure.
Recent updates
Recent developments include version 0.50 of the Cosmos SDK and the Covenant V1 system, which allows governance to directly manage Protocol-Owned Liquidity without intermediaries. A new whitepaper has also been published that redefines the role of the Cosmos Hub as the centre for interchain security and introduces a new issuance model for the ATOM token.
Cosmos (ATOM): price history
ATOM has no maximum supply and has reached an all-time high of $44.7. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results.
Staking Cosmos (ATOM)
On Young Platform you can activate ATOM staking in Liquid Staking mode through the provider Lido, with a minimum amount of 0.02 ATOM. The ATOM rewards received are automatically re-staked: they do not constitute financial interest, they are variable, they depend on the protocol and they are not guaranteed.
The Liquid Staking service relies on the Lido protocol, managed by third parties and falling outside the MiCAR authorisation scope. It involves specific risks: validator slashing, possible divergence of the derivative token’s price from ATOM (depeg) and technological risks of the protocol.
For clients in the Club Young Platform loyalty programme who hold a minimum amount of YNG tokens, additional bonuses in YNG are provided, under the terms set out in the Club information notice. YNG is a utility crypto-asset issued by Young Platform S.p.A.; for conditions, risks and details, consult the YNG White Paper.
How it started
Tendermint, the native framework that integrates the consensus mechanism, was created by Jae Kwon and Ethan Buchman in 2014 and launched in 2019. The project is supported by the Interchain Foundation, a Swiss non-profit.
