What is Yearn Finance (YFI)
Yearn Finance is a decentralised finance (DeFi) protocol that automates the search for yield across various protocols. Instead of manually monitoring rates and moving funds between platforms such as Aave, Compound and Curve — paying network fees each time — the user entrusts their assets to “vaults” that automatically allocate capital according to predefined strategies.
It should be clarified that these are strategies subject to risk: any returns are variable, dependent on market conditions and the underlying protocols, and not guaranteed. YFI is the protocol’s governance token.
How it works and governance
YFI allows holders to take part in decisions about the protocol’s development. A distinctive feature is its distribution: there was no pre-mining or privileged allocation to the founders, and the tokens were assigned to the platform’s users — a case often cited as an example of a “fair” launch in DeFi.
The supply is very limited (around 30,000 tokens in total), a factor that has historically contributed to very high unit prices.
How it began
Yearn Finance was created in 2020 by Andre Cronje, a developer who built the platform to solve the problem, also personal, of optimising yields in DeFi. It quickly became one of the best-known and most used DeFi protocols.
Its relevance remains tied to the overall performance of decentralised finance and to community trust.
Price trends and what to consider
Like all crypto-assets, YFI has shown a highly volatile price trend, with phases of strong growth followed by marked declines. Its quotations can be influenced by the general trend of the crypto market and by activity on the protocol.
Past performance is not a guarantee of future results. Any decision should be based on an independent and informed assessment of the risks.
