What is Harmony (ONE)
Harmony is a Layer 1 platform for smart contracts oriented towards scalability, addressing the so-called blockchain “trilemma” (the balance between decentralisation, security and scalability). Its main solution is sharding: splitting the network into several segments (shards) that process transactions in parallel, increasing overall capacity.
Note: Harmony is not currently supported by Young Platform; this page is purely informational. ONE is the native crypto-asset, used for fees and to take part in the network.
How it works
Harmony uses a variant of Proof of Stake called Effective Proof of Stake (EPoS) and a verifiable random function (VRF) to assign validators to shards securely. The goal is to offer fast, low-cost transactions, also with a focus on interoperability between different chains.
Decentralised applications (dapps), DeFi projects, NFTs and games are developed on the network: among the best known, the play-to-earn game DeFi Kingdom, which in 2021 attracted a large number of users.
How it began
Harmony was founded by Stephen Tse, an engineer with research experience on algorithms and protocols at companies such as Microsoft, Google and Apple. The project raised significant funding for the development of cross-chain, DeFi, NFT and DAO infrastructure.
Like many projects born during the sector’s strong expansion, Harmony later had to deal with a more difficult market environment, an element to consider in any assessment.
