What is Tezos (XTZ)
Tezos is a blockchain for decentralised applications and smart contracts, among the first Proof-of-Stake networks created. A distinctive feature is its “on-chain” governance: the protocol can upgrade itself through community votes without resorting to a hard fork, i.e. without splitting the network into two chains.
This “self-amending” model was designed to let the network evolve gradually and collectively. Tezos uses a particular form of consensus, Liquid Proof-of-Stake, which allows holders to delegate their validation rights. The project was conceived by Arthur Breitman and Kathleen Breitman and launched in 2017 through an ICO that raised around 37 million dollars.
Recent updates
Tezos has released a series of protocol upgrades identified by city names. Among the most recent, Oxford 2 and Paris improved efficiency and scalability by reducing block production times and introducing the Data Availability Layer, a component that supports “smart rollups” to increase network capacity. Ecosystem initiatives also include Google Cloud joining the network’s validators. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results.
